NK saw the end of our car and driver! Karst peaks and towering cliffs of limestone where we stayed in a bungalow on the river with bamboo, thatched roof and sublime views out over the river. We took a ferry to a village up the river Nam Oh, but were unable to carry on to our preferred destination, Phongsali because there was not enough travelers to make it economical. Here we sadly left our traveling companions Karen and Paul. to retrace our path to take the bumpy ride to Udomsai, a crossroads town on the route north to China where we enjoyed an unique experience eating in a restaurant in a traditional weave bamboo house. Despite a storm raging outdoors and drips coming through the roof, and a baby to look after, in the dim light in the simplest of kitchens our lady beavered away for ages. The food she presented was authentic Lao culinary magic. I enjoyed mok phaa a banana leaf fish dish.
Oh! Joy.
