The border crossing into Thailand involved signing out of Laos, five minutes ferry across the Mekong and check in to Thailand. What a change, modern city, good roads, Thai food, good coffee! Change of currency and on to Chiang Rai, Chiang beer and a night street market that stretched for several km. Saturday night was dance night and Julie asked a local for a dance while everyone looked on in amusement at her line dancing style. A days cycling took care of the local sights, then a super comfortable bus to Chiang Mai. The city was the biggest since leaving KL. Smog, racing traffic and the lowland heat were our main impressions. The moated old city made for interesting wanders however the sleepy beauty of tribal Chiang Mai from Julies trip in 1983 is well gone by now.
